The second post in our three-part series on this year's web design trends is about motion, and specifically, harnessing the power of HTML 5 to add visually attractive and even informative video or moving parts to websites in exciting new ways.
Subtlety is Key
Now, I'm sure we've all visited sites with obnoxious and totally distracting videos before, but when used properly, motion or ambient background videos can be used in truly impressive ways and for a variety of different purposes. In 2015, more and more website designers are using motion to create unique yet non-nauseating user experiences that are not only memorable but can also help to build a brand and inform site visitors.
Whether it's a background video or sections of content and images that move into place on the page, what's most effective from a visual and user experience prospective is using motion as subtly as possible. What do I mean by this? Creating less of an assault on the senses for anyone who visits your landing page, and eliciting more of a 'hey, is that background moving?!' kind of response.
Motion to Intrigue, Brand & Inform
Many website designers are doing away with static pages of content and using snappy background videos and animated objects to create a site 'mood' or atmosphere that's in line with a company or organization's branding. Portraying a restaurant as a hip, ultra-modern hang-out for young professionals, for instance, is just that much more effective with a background video that actually shows the dimly lit, lounge-style establishment with people sipping over-priced cocktails.
For companies that make and sell specific products, video is a great way to show those products in action.
Some are even using background videos to tell an organization's story, so to speak, in what is a highly effective live 'about us.' When it comes to using motion or video in website design in 2015, there's no shortage of ways that subtle motion can be used to enhance an online presence.
The Sky is the Limit with HTML 5
With HTML5, it's just that much easier to add the type of animation or video that's making for some very memorable, interactive websites. At Saltmedia, our website designers are actively using HTML 5 to build custom websites that command attention and deliver results.
